The Eastside Aztecs prepare for Burlingame

On a cool and windy Saturday afternoon (March 1st), the Eastside Aztecs faced off for their first game ever against the Burlingame Coyotes at the Burlingame Golf and Soccer Complex. The Aztecs, not knowing what to expect from this first lacrosse game, came out physical, determined to dominate on ground balls thus controlling possession of the game.

The first half saw both teams struggle to maintain possession, but the Aztecs physical size and agression allowed them to break free for 2 goals by midfielders Eddie Fedelin and Nate Lealao.

In the second half, the Aztecs physical strength and tenatiousness on ground balls allowed them to dominate posession and the players got the hang of the game. Passes flowed on offense and the Aztecs were able to get many shots on goal. Three second half goals, by Eddie Federlin, Eric Palomo, and LaShawn Rhodes added to a shut out on defense closed the door on the Aztecs first win.

The Aztecs were complimented by the referees of the contest for their agression and self control. The physical advantage for the Aztecs was obvious to all who witnessed the game, yet their players didn't abuse their opponent. Sportsmanship ruled the day as the players and parents went home happy with their first lacrosse experience.

December Clinic a Success

01/11/08

By Iliad Rodriguez

The Eastside Aztecs program hosted their first ever introductory clinic on December 5, 2007 at the Mathson Middle School in San Jose, California. On a bright, sunny morning a small group of boys joined Eastside coaches Iliad Rodriguez, Tyr Rodriguez, and Keith Allen in learning the lacrosse basic skills of passing, catching, scooping, and cradling. The new players took to lacrosse immediately and were enthusiastically scrimmaging by the end of the session.

This clinic was sponsored by the Eastside Aztecs Lacrosse Club, a new team playing in spring 2008 in the Northern California Junior Lacrosse Association, the league for youth lacrosse in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. The Eastside program is currently recruiting new athletes for the upcoming spring season. They will hold another introductory clinic on Saturday, January 12, 2008 at 10:30am at Mathson Middle School. Practice Begins!

Img_0164_large

The Eastside Aztecs celebrated the opening of the 2008 lacrosse season with a fun-filled day of lacrosse. The day began with a practice from 10am until 11:30 at the Mathson Middle School in San Jose. Players received helmets donated by Bellarmine College Preparatory High School and Sling It! Lacrosse and were able to shoot on their brand new goals for the first time! Even though the weather was cold, spirit and enthusiasm were high as the players engaged in their first inner-squad scrimmage.

After practice, Coach Rodriguez and Coach Allen took the team to its first pizza party and everyone ate their fill. Even though the pizza place was a bit short on staff and the food slow to arrive, the Eastside team basked in the glow of their first real practice. Players fired questions at Coach Rodriguez as they rifled through his lacrosse magazines at 100 miler per hour.

The team continued it's day at Stanford University attending the Stanford vs. UC Santa Barbara game. The rain storm that visited the Bay Area forced the postponment of the game a few hours as the game was moved to a nearby turf field. The Eatside players didn't seem to mind much as it gave them more time to practice their skills on the wide open Stanford field and enjoy a little rugby action.

Just before the game, the team was fortunate enough to meet UCSB head coach Mike Allen who shared a few words of inspiration with the team and posed for a quick photo. The game started off a bit sloppy, but the kids enjoyed it anyway rooting for every shot and hit. The rain proved to be a bit overwhelming however and the team left with UCSB in the lead 3-1.

The Eastside Aztecs had a blast and the team became even more excited to practice in the coming week.
